Python 3 7 Install On Mac

Pip was still giving me errors based on the install method I previously described. It was telling me that SSL was missing. This is needed to install some packages. So here my new method to install Python 3.6.9 on macOS Catalina: 1. Install openssl and zlib using brew. Download Python 3.6.9 from the source at python.org. Maria Campbell provides a post on installing the latest version of Python on Mac OS Catalina and overriding the old default pre-installed version. And it even uses Homebrew and not some gnarly steps. I finally did it. Skyrim mac os x. I successfully installed Python version 3.7.7 via Homebrew on my Mac laptop with OS Catalina installed.

Installing Python 3 on a Mac

<< Previous Note Next Note >>

Steps

  • Head to python.org. Click 'Downloads', then download the latest version from there:

This downloads the 64-bit version of the latest Python release (3.8.5 as of August 2020).
    • Alternatively, if you start from the release page such as https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-385/, you should scroll all the way to the bottom and choose 'macOS 64-bit installer', for OS X 10.9 and later. See screenshot here.
    • NOTE: If your Mac's OS version is older than 10.9 (year 2013), I recommend upgrading your OS first. If you are unable to, see this FAQ for how to install Python on an older version of Mac OS.
  • Proceed with installation. If everything goes fine, you should see an IDLE shortcut in your Launchpad.
  • Go ahead and try it out! Video tutorial here.

Should I Re-install?

If you already have a working version of Python on your laptop, you might be wondering if it is OK to keep it or you should re-install. The run-down:
  • Already have Python 3 but older version
If you previously installed an earlier version of Python 3 (say, 3.3.1 or something), then you should either update it or simply un-install it and then install the newest version of Python 3. That way, you can make sure you are working in the exactly same setup with the rest of the class, which just might save you some headache stemming from a configuration unique to your machine.
  • I have Anaconda Python
That works too! Make sure to update it to the latest 3.X version. There is one caveat: in LING 1330/2330, we will be using the interpretive shell interface via IDLE rather than Jupyter Notebook you probably have been using. This is how you launch IDLE for Anaconda Python:
    1. Open up a Terminal.
    2. Type in idle3 &, followed by ENTER. ('&' keeps Terminal usable while IDLE window is open.)

The Python 3.7 interpreter and runtime. Python is an easy to learn, powerful programming language. It has efficient high-level data structures and a simple but effective approach to object-oriented programming. Share your videos with friends, family, and the world. Pip is a tool for easily installing and managing Python packages, that is recommended over easyinstall. It is superior to easyinstall in several ways, and is actively maintained. $ pip2 -V # pip pointing to the Homebrew installed Python 2 interpreter $ pip -V # pip pointing to the Homebrew installed Python 3 interpreter (if installed).

Python for Mac OS X

Python comes pre-installed on Mac OS X so it is easy to startusing. However, to take advantage of the latest versions ofPython, you will need to download and install newer versionsalongside the system ones. The easiest way to do that is toinstall one of the binary installers for OS X from thePython Download page. Installers areavailable for the latest Python 3 and Python 2 releases thatwill work on all Macs that run Mac OS X 10.5 and later.

Python releases include IDLE, Python's built-in interactivedevelopment environment. If you download and install Pythonfrom the release page, you may also need to download and installa newer version of Tcl/Tk for OS X. See theIDLE and Tkinter on OS X page formore information.

You can run a Python interpreter by double-clicking onApplications / Utilities / Terminal and typing python3 (if you'veinstalled a version of Python 3) or python (to use Python 2) inthe window that opens up. You can also launch IDLE for the Pythonversion you have installed by double-clicking its icon inthe appropriate Python version folder in the Applications folderor you can also just type idle3 or idle Sketch only for mac. in a terminal window.

There are many thousands of additional Python software packagesavailable through PyPI, the PythonPackage Index. We recommend you use thepip tool to simplifyinstalling and managing additional packages. pip is includedwith Python 3.4 releases; for earlier releases, follow the pipinstall instructions.

Among the packages available through PyPI are some that arespecifically for OS X environments. Among these are:

  • pyobjc which providesa bridge between Python and Objective-C, allowing you to writefull-featured native Cocoa applications in pure Python.
  • py2app which allowsyou to make standalone OS X double-clickable application bundlesand plugins from Python scripts.
